As from 1 July 2016 new requirements will be applicable for shippers to verify the gross mass of a container carrying cargo.

Shipping lines will demand VGM weight before containers can be shipped.
The rules prescribe two methods by which the shipper may obtain the verified gross mass of a packed container:

1. shipper or a third party will weight the container

2. shipper or a third party will weight all packages and cargo items  and add the tare mass of the container.

The equipment used must meet the applicable accuracy standards and requirements of the state in which the equipment is being used.
